Verdict

Choose Auth0 if you are adding login to an application your customers or B2B tenants use. Choose Okta Workforce Identity if you need your own employees to sign in once to the SaaS and internal apps they work in. Many organizations run both, because they solve different problems.

On this page

Short answer: Auth0 and Okta are both Okta products, so the real choice is who signs in. Choose Auth0 if you are building login for customers or B2B SaaS tenants inside your own application. Choose Okta Workforce Identity if IT needs employees to reach Microsoft 365, Salesforce and internal apps with one login. Organizations that have both problems usually buy both.

Key takeaways

  • Okta completed its acquisition of Auth0 on May 3, 2021, and runs Auth0 as a separate business unit (Auth0 announcement); both platforms are still sold.
  • Auth0 is priced by monthly active users, starting at $35 a month for 500 MAU on B2C Essentials, while Okta Workforce Identity is priced per user from $6 a month with a $1,500 annual minimum (vendor pricing pages, checked September 22, 2026).
  • The biggest gap is purpose: Okta Workforce Identity ships 8,000-plus prebuilt app integrations for employee SSO, and Auth0 ships SDKs and code hooks for your own application's login.
  • The biggest fine-print item on Auth0 is enterprise SSO gating: B2C Essentials includes no enterprise connections, B2B Essentials includes 3, and each extra costs $100 a month.
  • Okta also sells a third product, Okta Customer Identity, which competes with Auth0 for customer login rather than with Okta Workforce Identity.

Auth0 vs Okta at a glance

The table above compares Auth0 with Okta Workforce Identity, the product most "Okta vs Auth0" searchers mean when they say "Okta." Values come from each vendor's pricing and documentation pages, checked September 22, 2026. "Not published" means the vendor's public pages do not state it.

Watch out: comparing Auth0 prices with Okta per-user prices directly is misleading. One counts customers who logged in this month; the other counts every employee account you license, whether or not they log in.

Choose Auth0 if

  • You are building or running a web or mobile application and need sign-up, login, social login and MFA for its users.
  • You sell B2B SaaS and your customers ask to sign in with their own Okta, Entra ID or Google Workspace (inbound enterprise SSO).
  • Your team wants to customize login logic in code, using Auth0 Actions written in Node.js (Okta community blog).
  • Your user count is large but monthly activity is modest, so MAU pricing works in your favor.

Choose Okta Workforce Identity if

  • You need employees and contractors to sign in once to SaaS apps such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Salesforce and Slack.
  • You want joiner, mover and leaver automation that creates and removes accounts in those apps (Lifecycle Management, Core Essentials suite and above).
  • IT, not a development team, will own the identity platform and configure it in an admin console.
  • Auditors expect access reviews and governance evidence for internal systems.

Auth0 and Okta are the same company, with three identity products

Okta sells three identity products, and the "Auth0 vs Okta" question makes sense only once they are separated. According to Okta's own comparison, Okta Customer Identity (OCI) "is an enterprise-first platform built for IT administrators," while "Auth0 is a developer-first platform offering granular, pro-code customization." The same post says OCI runs on the same infrastructure as Okta Workforce Identity (OWI) but is built for external customers.

So the honest answer to "is Auth0 better than Okta" is that Auth0 competes with Okta Customer Identity, not with Okta Workforce Identity. The Okta and Auth0 page presents the two platforms as complementary.

Use case: Auth0 is for your app's users, Okta Workforce Identity is for your staff

Okta Workforce Identity is the stronger product for employee access, and Auth0 is the stronger product for customer login. This is a split by design, not a tie.

Okta Workforce Identity acts as the identity provider (IdP) for your organization. Employees authenticate to Okta, and Okta signs them into third-party apps with SAML or OIDC. The Okta Integration Network lists more than 8,000 prebuilt integrations, which is what makes employee SSO a configuration task rather than a development project.

Auth0 sits inside your own application. Your developers call Auth0 through SDKs and APIs to handle sign-up, login, password reset, social login and token issuance for users you do not employ. Auth0 has no equivalent of a catalog of employee SaaS apps, because that is not its job.

Admin tip: if the people signing in are on your payroll or HR system, start with Okta Workforce Identity. If they are in your product's user database, start with Auth0.

Enterprise SSO: where Auth0's plan gates matter

For B2B SaaS vendors, Auth0 is the stronger fit, but its plan gates decide the price. An "enterprise connection" in Auth0 is an inbound SAML or OIDC link to one customer's own IdP, so each business customer that wants to sign in with its Okta or Entra ID tenant typically uses one.

Per the Auth0 pricing page, checked September 22, 2026:

  • Free: 1 enterprise connection, 25,000 MAU, 5 organizations.
  • B2C Essentials and B2C Professional: no enterprise connections listed.
  • B2B Essentials: 3 enterprise connections included, up to 27 more at $100 a month each.
  • B2B Professional: 5 included, up to 25 more at $100 a month each.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing.

A SaaS company with 20 business customers on SSO would pay for 17 extra connections on B2B Essentials, or $1,700 a month on top of the MAU price, before moving to an Enterprise contract.

Okta Workforce Identity does not have this gate, because in the workforce model your organization is the IdP and apps are the service providers. Okta also sells inbound federation for its own customer product (OCI), but that is a separate purchase.

Lifecycle, governance and MFA: Okta Workforce Identity is ahead

Okta Workforce Identity is the clear winner for identity administration inside an organization. The Okta pricing page lists these by suite, checked September 22, 2026:

  • Starter ($6/user/month): SSO, MFA, Universal Directory, 5 Workflows; Adaptive MFA and Lifecycle Management are add-ons.
  • Core Essentials ($14): adds Adaptive MFA and Lifecycle Management; Workflows stay at 5.
  • Essentials ($17): adds Identity Governance, 2 Privileged Access admins and 50 Workflows.
  • Professional (quote): adds Device Access, Identity Security Posture Management, Identity Threat Protection and a sandbox.
  • Enterprise (quote): adds API Access Management, Access Gateway and machine-to-machine tokens.

Auth0 does not provision accounts into other SaaS apps or run access reviews for staff. Its MFA is aimed at your application's users: basic MFA on Free, Pro MFA on Essentials, and Enterprise MFA as a $100 a month add-on on B2B Essentials or included on Professional (Auth0 pricing).

Developer extensibility: Auth0 is ahead

Auth0 is the stronger platform when login logic needs custom code. Okta's own community post describes Auth0 as offering "granular, pro-code customization (via Node.js Actions)," while OCI and Okta Workforce Identity favor "out-of-the-box, scalable identity policies with minimal coding" (Okta community blog).

Auth0 plan features that matter to developers, per the Auth0 pricing page:

  • Custom database connections (bring your existing user store) on Professional plans.
  • One custom domain on Free, Essentials and Professional; 20 on Enterprise.
  • Machine-to-machine tokens as a paid add-on.
  • An AI Agents add-on priced as a 50% surcharge on the base plan.

Okta Workforce Identity's automation runs through Okta Workflows, a no-code builder whose run limits scale by suite (5 on Starter and Core Essentials, 50 on Essentials).

Auth0 vs Okta pricing compared

Auth0 and Okta Workforce Identity use different units, so the fair comparison is by scenario. All figures from the Auth0 pricing page and Okta pricing page, checked September 22, 2026. Auth0 yearly billing is 11 times the monthly price; Okta suites are billed annually.

Okta Workforce Identity, annual cost by employee count

EmployeesStarter ($6)Essentials ($17)
10$1,500 (annual minimum applies; list math is $720)$2,040
50$3,600$10,200
250$18,000$51,000

Auth0, cost at 1,000 monthly active users

Auth0 planMonthlyYearly (11x monthly)
Free$0 (up to 25,000 MAU)$0
B2C Essentials$70$770
B2B Essentials$300$3,300
B2B Professional$800$8,800

Auth0 publishes B2C Essentials up to 50,000 MAU ($3,500 a month); B2B tiers move to "contact us" at 30,000 MAU on Essentials and 20,000 MAU on Professional. Okta prices Professional and Enterprise suites by quote only, so larger Okta deals cannot be priced from public pages.

Pricing note: negotiated enterprise prices for either product are not published; treat the list prices above as a ceiling for comparison, checked September 22, 2026.

The fine print compared

These are the items that differ between Auth0 and Okta Workforce Identity. Anything not on a vendor page is marked "Not published."

Watch out: Auth0's short log retention on self-serve plans (1 to 10 days) means you should stream logs to your SIEM from day one; Professional plans include 2 log streams.

Security record compared

Auth0 and Okta share a parent company and a trust center, so their security posture is best read together. The Okta Security Trust Center lists SOC 1, SOC 2 and SOC 3 reports, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, 27017 and 27018, PCI DSS v4.0.0, HIPAA, FedRAMP Moderate and High, DoD IL5 and CSA STAR, and states solutions are offered "through Okta and Auth0."

Okta's root cause post attributes the 2023 incident to service account credentials saved in an employee's personal Google profile on a company laptop. For a FedRAMP requirement, Okta's listing is the relevant one; Auth0's compliance page does not list FedRAMP.

Switching between Auth0 and Okta, or running both

Most teams do not switch between Auth0 and Okta Workforce Identity, because they solve different problems. The common pattern is to run both: Okta Workforce Identity for staff, Auth0 for the product's customers. Your employees can even sign into your own Auth0-backed admin tools through an enterprise connection to your Okta tenant.

If you are moving customer users into Auth0 from another system:

  • Auth0 bulk user import accepts JSON files up to 500KB per job, and imports password hashes made with supported algorithms. Users with unsupported hashes must reset their password at first login.
  • Custom database connections can front an existing user store instead of importing it.

If you are leaving Auth0, the Management API exposes tenant data, but password hashes are released only through a support ticket, not on the Free plan, and Auth0 does not guarantee a delivery date (Auth0 docs). Build that lead time into any migration plan.

FAQ

Is Auth0 owned by Okta?

Yes. Okta completed its acquisition of Auth0 on May 3, 2021, and Auth0 operates as a business unit within Okta (Auth0 announcement). Both the Auth0 platform and the Okta platform continue to be sold.

Do I need both Okta Workforce Identity and Auth0?

You need both only if you have both problems: employees signing into business apps, and customers signing into an application you build. Okta Workforce Identity covers the first and Auth0 covers the second. A company that only buys SaaS and builds nothing customer-facing needs only Okta Workforce Identity.

Can Auth0 be used for employee SSO?

Auth0 can authenticate anyone into applications you build, including internal tools, but it does not ship the 8,000-plus prebuilt SaaS integrations, lifecycle management or access governance that Okta Workforce Identity includes. For staff access to third-party SaaS, Okta Workforce Identity is the product Okta designs for that job.

Is Auth0 cheaper than Okta?

Auth0 is free up to 25,000 monthly active users, and its B2C Essentials plan costs $70 a month for 1,000 MAU. Okta Workforce Identity starts at $6 per user per month with a $1,500 annual minimum. The units differ, so the cheaper option depends on whether you are licensing employees or counting active customers (pricing checked September 22, 2026).

What is the difference between Auth0 and Okta Customer Identity?

Both are Okta's customer identity products. Okta describes Okta Customer Identity as enterprise-first and low-code for IT administrators, and Auth0 as developer-first with code-level customization through Node.js Actions. Okta Customer Identity publishes a $3K per month base platform price, billed annually.

Bottom line

If the people signing in work for you, buy Okta Workforce Identity and size it with the per-seat table above. If they use your product, build on Auth0, and price your enterprise connections before you promise SSO to B2B customers. The verdict changes only if you want low-code customer login run by IT, which is the case for Okta Customer Identity instead of Auth0.
