Short answer: Auth0 is a customer identity and access management (CIAM) platform, owned by Okta, that developers use to add login, social sign-in, MFA and enterprise SSO to their own applications. It fits SaaS and app teams whose customers need SAML or OIDC sign-in. It is not an employee SSO portal; for that, look at Okta Workforce or Entra ID.

Key takeaways

  • Auth0's Free plan covers up to 25,000 monthly active users (MAUs) and one enterprise connection; paid plans start at $35 per month for B2C Essentials at 500 MAUs (Auth0 pricing, checked September 22, 2026).
  • The biggest catch for B2B software vendors is the enterprise connection cap: 3 on B2B Essentials, 5 on B2B Professional, and $100 per month for each extra connection.
  • Inbound SCIM provisioning works only through enterprise connections and needs a plan that includes them (Auth0 docs).
  • Auth0 publishes SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001/27017/27018, CSA STAR and PCI DSS attestations. It says it guarantees 99.99% availability on its public cloud, but the pricing page lists the 99.99% SLA on the Enterprise plan only.
  • Leaving Auth0 with passwords intact is possible but gated: hash export is not available on the Free plan and needs a support case, a PGP key and an executive signature (Auth0 export data docs).

What is Auth0 used for

Auth0 is used to handle sign-up, login and session management for applications a company builds and ships to its own users. Developers connect an app to an Auth0 tenant through SDKs and standard protocols, and Auth0 hosts the login page, stores or federates the user identities, and issues tokens back to the app.

A single Auth0 tenant can offer password (database) logins, social logins and enterprise connections side by side. Enterprise connections are what let a SaaS vendor's business customer sign in with their own identity provider. Auth0 documents SAML, OpenID Connect, ADFS, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, LDAP/Active Directory, PingFederate, SharePoint, Office 365 and Okta Workforce connection types (Auth0 enterprise connections).

Auth0's homepage now also markets Auth0 for AI Agents, covering user authentication for agents, a Token Vault, authorization for Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools and fine-grained authorization for RAG data (auth0.com).

Okta completed its acquisition of Auth0 on May 3, 2021, and said Auth0 would run as an independent business unit (Auth0 blog).

Who Auth0 is for

Auth0 fits a 30-person B2B SaaS startup whose first enterprise customers ask for SAML sign-in against their Entra ID or Okta tenant. The Free plan includes one enterprise connection, and B2B Essentials includes three with unlimited Organizations, which covers the first few customer tenants without building SAML handling in-house (Auth0 pricing).

Auth0 also fits a consumer app team that wants social logins and MFA without running its own identity store. B2C Essentials starts at $35 per month for 500 MAUs, and B2C Professional includes Enterprise MFA.

A third fit is a regulated organization (healthcare, payments, financial services) building customer portals. Auth0 lists a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement on request, PCI DSS deployment options and FAPI certification, and offers single-tenant private cloud deployments (Auth0 compliance).

Who should not buy Auth0

IT teams that want employees to sign in once to Microsoft 365, Salesforce and other third-party SaaS apps should not start with Auth0. Auth0 is positioned as a developer-focused platform for identity in applications you build (Auth0 blog); workforce SSO catalogs are the job of products such as Okta Workforce Identity or Microsoft Entra ID.

B2B SaaS vendors that expect dozens of customers to each need their own SAML connection should model costs carefully. Auth0's pricing page lists 3 enterprise connections on B2B Essentials and 5 on B2B Professional, with each additional connection at $100 per month, so 20 SSO customers on Professional add $1,500 per month before any MAU growth. A developer-focused SSO API such as WorkOS is the usual comparison point for this case.

Consumer apps that plan to offer business customers SSO later should note that B2C Essentials and B2C Professional include no enterprise connections.

Teams that need round-the-clock support without buying an add-on should also look elsewhere: Auth0's standard self-service support runs 6 AM to 6 PM customer local time, Monday to Friday.

Features that matter

Enterprise SSO connections and protocols

Auth0 supports SAML and OpenID Connect as generic protocols plus named connectors for ADFS, Entra ID, Google Workspace, LDAP/AD, PingFederate and Okta Workforce. The Okta Workforce connection does not count toward the enterprise connection limit, which matters for B2B vendors whose customers run Okta (Auth0 docs). Connection counts are the main plan gate: 1 on Free, 3 on B2B Essentials, 5 on B2B Professional, custom on Enterprise.

MFA and attack protection

Enterprise MFA is included on Professional plans and is a $100-per-month add-on on B2B Essentials; the B2C Essentials plan does not list it, and it is not available on Free (Auth0 pricing, checked September 22, 2026). Auth0 rate-limits SMS MFA to 10 messages per device per hour and throttles repeated failed database logins from one IP to one account (Auth0 rate limit policy).

Compliance and data residency

Auth0 publishes annual SOC 2 Type 2 audits across all five Trust Services Criteria, ISO 27001/27017/27018, CSA STAR, PCI DSS, GDPR readiness and FAPI certification. HIPAA compliance is not available on Azure deployments (Auth0 compliance). Public cloud tenants run in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Japan or Canada; private cloud is offered in over 60 regions (Auth0 cloud deployment).

Provisioning with inbound SCIM

Auth0 accepts inbound SCIM for SAML, OIDC, Okta Workforce and Entra ID enterprise connections, so a customer's IT team can provision and deprovision users from their own directory. Google Workspace provisioning goes through Directory Sync instead. SCIM is not available for social or database connections (Auth0 SCIM docs).

Organizations for B2B multi-tenancy

Auth0 Organizations models each business customer as its own organization, with its own login options, branding, email templates and roles (Auth0 docs). Free includes 5 Organizations, B2C plans 10, and B2B plans unlimited.

Logging and monitoring

Log retention is short on self-service plans: 1 day on Free, 5 days on Essentials, 10 days on Professional. Log streaming (1 stream on Essentials, 2 on Professional) is how you keep longer history, so plan to send logs to your SIEM from day one.

Day-to-day admin and scale

Day-to-day Auth0 administration happens in the tenant dashboard and the Management API. Admins create applications, add connections per application or per Organization, and assign dashboard roles (for example, Editor - Users or Dashboard Viewer - Users) (Auth0 bulk export docs).

Scale limits are set per API, per endpoint, per tenant type (production versus development) and per subscription level. Auth0 publishes those numbers in a separate rate limit configuration matrix rather than on the policy page, so check it against your expected login peaks before launch (Auth0 rate limit policy). Extensibility (Actions) concurrency ranges from 250 on public cloud to 1,200 on high-tier private cloud.

Admin tip: SCIM logs drop the members attribute for any group POST or PUT with more than 1,000 members in the request body, so large group syncs are harder to audit from Auth0 logs alone (Auth0 SCIM docs).

The fine print

  • Licensing tiers and gates: Free, Essentials, Professional and Enterprise, each split into B2C and B2B editions with different prices and connection limits (Auth0 pricing).
  • SSO/SCIM plan requirements: enterprise connections 1 (Free), 3 (B2B Essentials), 5 (B2B Professional), $100 per month each extra; none on B2C paid plans. Inbound SCIM requires a plan with enterprise connections.
  • Agent or extension footprint: none; Auth0 is a hosted service integrated through SDKs and protocols.
  • API access by plan: the Management API is available, with rate limits that vary by plan; M2M tokens are 5,000 included on Professional plans, with add-ons.
  • Key integrations: Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta Workforce, ADFS, LDAP/AD, PingFederate, generic SAML and OIDC.
  • Data residency: six public cloud regions; private cloud in 60+ regions.
  • Compliance reports: SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001/27017/27018, CSA STAR, PCI DSS AoC via the Support Center, HIPAA BAA on request.
  • MSP multi-tenancy: Not published as an MSP program; Organizations covers B2B multi-tenancy inside one app.
  • Trial realities: a permanent Free plan instead of a trial, with community support only and no SLA.
  • Contract terms: monthly or yearly billing on self-service plans; minimum term and auto-renewal terms for Enterprise are not published.

Watch out: logs are kept for 10 days at most on self-service plans, which is short for incident investigations; stream them out.

Support

Auth0 support depends on the plan. Self-service paid plans get the Auth0 Support Center from 6 AM to 6 PM customer local time, Monday to Friday, with response targets from 3 business hours (Severity 1) to 2 business days (Severity 4). Premier Success plans add 24x7 coverage and optional phone support: Basic (24x5, Priority 1 in 2 hours), Silver (24x7, 1 hour) and Gold (24x7, 30 minutes). The Free plan gets community support only (Auth0 support plans).

Exit and lock-in

Auth0 user profiles export as NDJSON or CSV through bulk export jobs; CSV exports are limited to 30 fields, and bulk export is not available on the Free plan (Auth0 docs).

Password hashes and MFA secrets are not in that export, and Auth0 says hash exports are not available on the Free plan (Auth0 export data docs). A request needs a support case, a 4096-bit RSA PGP key, an eligibility review, confirmation from a second tenant admin (skipped if you are the only admin) and an acknowledgment form signed by a CISO, CSO or VP-level executive. Auth0 gives no ETA, and the download link expires after 3 days (Auth0 docs). Open that request at the start of any migration off Auth0.

Auth0 pricing

Auth0 bills by monthly active users. Free covers up to 25,000 MAUs. B2C Essentials starts at $35 per month and B2C Professional at $240 per month, both at 500 MAUs; B2B Essentials starts at $150 per month and B2B Professional at $800 per month. Enterprise is quote only (Auth0 pricing, checked September 22, 2026). A dedicated Auth0 pricing breakdown covers MAU tiers and add-ons in detail.

FAQ

Is Auth0 free?

Auth0 has a permanent Free plan for up to 25,000 monthly active users with one enterprise connection. It has no SLA, community support only, 1-day log retention and no bulk user export.

Is Auth0 owned by Okta?

Yes. Okta completed its acquisition of Auth0 on May 3, 2021, and Auth0 continues as its own product line for customer identity alongside Okta's workforce identity products.

What is the difference between Auth0 and Okta?

Auth0 is for identity in applications you build for customers or partners. Okta Workforce Identity is for employees signing in to the company's own SaaS and internal apps.

Is Auth0 an SSO provider?

Auth0 provides SSO across a company's own applications and lets business customers sign in with their own SAML or OIDC identity provider. It is not typically used as an employee SSO portal for third-party SaaS apps.

Has Auth0 been breached?

Auth0 disclosed in September 2022 that source code repositories from October 2020 and earlier were copied. Auth0 said it found no evidence of access to its or customers' environments.

Bottom line

If you are building a SaaS or consumer app and need login plus a handful of customer SAML connections, Auth0 is a strong shortlist candidate; start on Free or B2B Essentials and model connection costs at your expected customer count. If more than about five customers will need SSO, price the $100-per-connection add-ons against a dedicated SSO API before committing. If you need employee SSO, Auth0 is the wrong category.

Next step: compare Auth0 with other SSO options on the ITSecureOps shortlist.
