How to choose network monitoring software

Start with the incidents your team must explain. A device poller, flow analyzer and Internet path test answer different questions, so test the same devices, sites and failure scenarios before comparing license prices. The vendor list below is a market map; independent reviews remain unscored until verified.

Collection coverage

Which devices, interfaces, services and paths need polling or tests? Verify protocol support and credentials against your own inventory, including SNMP version and permissions.

Primary source →

Site architecture

Where must probes or collectors run, and what happens when a WAN link fails? Test one branch or client site instead of relying on a central-console screenshot.

Primary source →

Discovery and topology

Does discovery identify the physical or logical links you need, or only create monitored devices? Reconcile a pilot map against known switch ports and routes.

Primary source →

Cost and evidence

Count the vendor's actual billing unit and required retention, support and export options. Preserve enough historical data to compare an incident before retiring the existing tool.

These questions guide a product pilot. Vendor cards below are a market map, not a ranking; unreviewed products have no research score.
